A tribute to...
‘Ireland’s Forgotten Famine Girls’

Between 1848 and 1850, 4,114 young Irish girls mostly aged between 14-to-18 and orphaned by Famine, were sent to Australia to ease pressure on the workhouses and to help ‘populate the colonies’. Under the Earl Grey scheme they went from workhouses in every county in Ireland. The first ship carrying the Irish Orphan Girls – the Earl Grey – arrived in Sydney Harbour on 6th October 1848.

This song, Orphan Girl, helps keep alive their story.

Today, up to 2 million Australians owe their heritage to those 4,114 Irish Orphan Girls.
